Protection Coordination

To protect equipment and isolate the subject faulted circuit, protective devices (including relays and adjustable circuit breakers) need to be carefully selected and set.

The art of the coordination study is to localize a fault when it occurs and minimize loss of power across the electrical system.

Applicable Standards

IEEE Red Book standard 141 “Recommended Practice for Electric Power Distribution for Industrial Plants”, and IEEE Buff Book standard 242, “Recommended Practice for Protection and Coordination of Industrial and Commercial Power Systems”, are the sources for performing the coordination study.
